Do you know about Cornerstone’s Outpatient Surgery Program?
If you have found yourself saying . . . “It’s not the right time.” “Recovery is too long.” “It’s too costly.” There is a better option.
Join Dr. Thomas Eickmann for a free healthcare seminar at the Surgery Center at Lutheran Wednesday July 22, 2015 from 6 – 7 p.m.
Dr. Thomas Eickmann, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon. He is a member of the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as the Hip & Knee Society. His dedication to patient satisfaction, safety, and personal care drives his ability to send his patients home quickly while also guiding an exceptional recovery. The speedy recovery from Dr. Eickmann’s surgery stems from blood conserving surgical practices, proper anesthetic techinques, and his passion for optimizing joint replacement.
Doctors, physicians, and staff at Cornerstone Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine donated their time and services to almost 100 Holy Family High School students on June 6, 2015.
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, young athletes have a growing risk of developing stress fractures, tendinitis, and other overuse injuries due to the increased intensity of youth sports. The rise in sports related injuries is precisely why Cornerstone Orthopaedics donated their Saturday morning to Holy Family High School.
Upon getting their blood pressure checked as well as an eye exam, students were given a physical by a primary care physician. Doctor Boehm from Coal Creek Family Medicine as well as Doctor Mazzola from Cornerstone Orthopaedics administered the physicals. Additionally, Doctors were able to talk with each student regarding risk factors associated with their sport(s), ways to reduce overuse injuries, possible training tips, and any sports safety questions students had for Doctors.
Part of the goal for staff at Holy Family High School as well as Cornerstone Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine was to encourage students to take important steps towards establishing proper medical routine before the sports season. Although the medical paperwork seemed daunting to many students, they were encouraged to fill out paperwork while parents checked in at the front desk. At the end of the visit, students were rewarded with a free Cornerstone backpack as well as a pair of sunglasses or earbuds. Thankfully, no student athletes were injured during the paperwork process.

This summer, from July 10-19, Cornerstone doctors had the privilege of being the official medical team for the 2014 FIL Lacrosse World Championships at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. This festival of lacrosse is the largest tournament the sport sees. Coming only once every 4 years, it is to lacrosse what the World Cup is to soccer. 38 nations were represented this year, including 9 newcomers: Belgium, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Israel, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, and fan favorite Uganda. 142 international games were played. Along with the international championship, 300 youth and adult teams, encompassing all age groups, from 7 year olds to 60 year olds participated in a festival tournament.
Team USA vs Team Canada
In the championship game on July 19 Canada captured its third gold medal after upsetting the United States 8-5 in front of 11,861 fans. Canadian goalie Dillon Ward was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after he made 10 saves in the championship game, becoming the first goalie to ever receive the honor. The Iroquois Nation upset the Australian squad 16-5 for third place, making this year both the first time Iroquois has medaled and the first time Australia has not earned a medal.

This massive event covered a myriad of fields in addition to the stadium at the Dicks Sporting Goods Park complex, and at any given time over the ten days there were multiple games being played at the same time. Cornerstone docs treated a wide variety of lacrosse injuries, ranging from bumps and bruises to a broken neck. Several of the injured players received follow-up care in the Cornerstone office before returning to their home countries. Dr. Joseph Hsin said: “It was great working with lacrosse players of different ages and nationalities, not only the American superstars, but also players from lesser-known countries like Thailand, where the sport is just in its beginning stages.” He went on to say that the privilege of being intimately involved this international event really struck home when interacting with the team from Netherlands after the news broke that nearly 200 of their fellow countrymen had been lost in the downing of the Malaysian airliner. Also bringing perspective to all those involved in treating these athletes was the decision of Israel to rush its final game when seven of their team had to depart after being called up to active military duty due to the outbreak of war.

Cornerstone physicians, along with a team of athletic trainers, volunteered their time, providing medical coverage for the ten day event. This group of community minded orthopedic surgeons have a love for working with sports medicine on all levels, from pee wee sports, to high school and college athletics, to professional and Olympic athletes, and now to international competitors. Cornerstone Orthopedics and Sports Medicine looks forward to continued involvement with the sport of lacrosse.
