Biography

Originally from the Chicago-land area, Dr. Efren Caballes joined Cornerstone Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in 2016. His approach to patient care is based on combining all available modalities for musculoskeletal conditions including exercise, physical modalities, bracing, injections, and regenerative medicine. One of his special interests is diagnostic and therapeutic use of musculoskeletal ultrasound. His clinical repertoire of treatments focuses on continually balancing the patient’s physical goals with optimal recovery needs. “As a Sports Medicine Physiatrist, I believe in providing the best care for my patients by extending musculoskeletal care beyond the diagnosis,” Dr. Caballes said. “I focus on the functional assessment with the goal of understanding the impact on the patient’s physical and daily activities.”

Prior to working at Cornerstone Orthopaedics, Dr. Caballes earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Molecular Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and attended medical school at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City (NYC). Dr. Caballes completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at New York University (NYU) Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident, and completed a PM&R Sports Medicine Fellowship at NYU. His training also provided him the opportunity to take care of the numerous endurance athletes at the NYU Center for Musculoskeletal Care Running Performance Lab, as well as musicians and dancers at the Julliard School and Harkness Center for Dance Injuries.

Dr. Caballes developed an enthusiasm for running while in NYC, where he joined the Prospect Park Track Club and volunteered with Back on My Feet – an organization combating homelessness through the power of running. Since moving to Colorado, he has become actively involved in several running organizations in the area such as the Boulder Track Club. “I am dedicated to continuous self-education and use of evidence-based practice aimed at providing runners an avenue to continue their sport pain-free and without risk of further injury,” Dr. Caballes said.

As an avid runner and outdoor enthusiast, Dr. Caballes has completed several marathons in New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia to name a few. He also enjoys cross country skiing, cycling, hiking, and traveling/running Ragnar Relay Races with his wife.
